Lo sviluppo urbanistico di Grottammare ha conosciuto, nel secondo dopoguerra del secolo scorso, una forte spinta dovuta alla notevole crescita demografica vissuta dalla città soprattutto a partire dagli anni sessanta. Tale sviluppo ha condotto a una espansione edilizia che si è riversata innanzitutto nella parte del territorio a sud del fiume Tesino compreso tra il mare e la Statale Adriatica. Si sono così andati a formare due nuovi quartieri, Ischia I, prossimo alle attività vivaistiche ancora presenti nei pressi della foce del Tesino, e il più popoloso Ischia II, che ha trovato il suo centro urbano e vitale nell’attuale Piazza Carducci. Tale piazza, su cui si affacciano molte delle attività commerciali del quartiere, rappresenta per gli abitanti di questa parte di Grottammare, che si sviluppa senza soluzione di continuità urbanistica fino alla confinante San Benedetto del Tronto, il principale luogo di ritrovo e di attività comunitarie.

Villa Sgariglia
Nella parte collinare prospiciente Piazza Carducci è presente una delle ville storiche più belle di Grottammare, Villa Sgariglia, ancora oggi di proprietà privata ma aperta al pubblico su richiesta e in particolari occasioni. Edificata nella seconda metà del Settecento con successivi interventi ottocenteschi, la villa costituiva la dimora di campagna dei nobili Sgariglia e si trovava in un ampio fondo agricolo. La villa si sviluppa su tre livelli fuori terra, con piano seminterrato, e si caratterizza sul fronte principale per due avancorpi poligonali, di cui uno adibito a cappella. Alle spalle della villa si trova il giardino, la cui progettazione è attribuibile allo scultore e architetto ascolano Lazzaro Giosafatti. Il giardino, tra i più belli e conosciuti della regione Marche, presenta un andamento irregolare a terrazzi, dovuto all’andamento orografico del terreno. Conformandosi in questo modo al terreno in cui sorge, il giardino finisce per assumere le forme di un vero e proprio teatro verde, arricchito da vialetti, siepi e piante rare, nonché da una ricca decorazione lapidea, con sfere, piramidi e anfore.

Carducci Square
During the second post-war of the last century, Grottammare experienced significant urban development, driven by the considerable demographic growth the city underwent, especially from the 1960s onwards. This development led to a building expansion primarily in the southern part of the territory, situated in the Tesino river between the sea and the Adriatic Highway. Two new neighborhoods emerged as a result: “Ischia I”, adjacent to the still-existing horticultural activities near the mouth of the Tesino, and the more populous “Ischia II”, which found its urban and vital center in the current Carducci square. Here, many commercial activities of the neighborhood are located, making it the main meeting point and hub for the residents of this part of Grottammare.

Sgariglia House
Overlooking Carducci square in the hilly area stands one of Grottammare’s most beautiful historic villas: Sgariglia House. Still privately owned today but open to the public upon request and on special occasions, the house was built in the second half of the 18th century with subsequent 19th-century interventions. It served as the country residence of the noble Sgariglia family and was situated on a large agricultural estate. The villa, featuring a small chapel on its main front, boasts a garden attributed to the sculptor and architect from Ascoli, Lazzaro Giosafatti. The garden, among the most beautiful and renowned in the Marche region, has an irregular terraced layout following the terrain’s contours, resembling a true green theater. It is enriched with pathways, hedges, rare plants, and a rich stone decoration with spheres, pyramids, and amphorae.
